The city of Aspen, named after the Aspen trees that are abundant in the area, started out as a mining camp for silver during the 1880s. The area became quiet after the collapse of the silver market but its economy was revived in the middle of the 20th century when the Aspen Mountain was developed into a ski resort. Although the character of the city has been changed due to its emerging real estate market, there are still quite a number of historical buildings worth seeing in the area. Among its noteworthy attractions include the Wheeler Opera House, Independence Building, Pitkin County Courthouse, Elks Building, Hotel Jerome, Aspen Community Church and many more. The city is still best known for a top skiing destination and offers several spectacular spots. Tourists love flocking Maroon Bells, Independence Pass, Maroon Lake Scenic Trail, Aspen Mountain and Aspen Highlands, Rio Grande Trail and the John Denver Sanctuary.
