Aurora, a 45.80 square mile suburb in Chicago, is the second most populous city in the state, with almost 200,000 residents. The city officially took the nickname as the City of Lights in 1908 for being one of the first cities to implement an all-electric lighting system in the entire country. Aurora’s downtown area offers several architectural features and historical landmarks that are worth visiting. Leland Tower, a former hotel, was once the tallest building in Illinois outside the capital and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Other places to check out are the Paramount Theatre, a live performance theater also on the National Register of Historic Places, the Sri Venkateswara Swami Temple, Phillips Park Zoo, Aurora Historical Society and Aurora Regional Fire Museum. The city also holds several events that attract more than 10,000 people. Downtown Alive happens every summer and offers live music and food booths while Blues on the Fox, which features national blues artists, happens on Father’s Day weekend.
