Located within the New York metropolitan area is the 44.3 square mile city of Danbury. The area was originally called Pahquioque after the Native American tribe that lived there. It was also called Paquiack, which meant ‘open plain’ or ‘cleared land’ then later became Swampfield. In 1687, the court decreed its current name, Danbury. Danbury has quite a lot of attractions to offer to its visitors. It is home to three museums, the Danbury Museum and Historical Society, Danbury Railway Museum and Military Museum of Southern New England. Parks and hiking trails also abound the area. Among the most popular ones include the Bear Mountain Reservation, Ives Trail, Tarrywile Mansion and Park, Danbury Candlewood Park, Elmwood Park, Hatters Community Park and many others. There are also several destinations that have been added to the National Register of Historic Places such as the Charles Ives House, Main Street Historic District, Meeker’s Hardware and the Ball and Roller Bearing Company.
