As home to five national parks, Utah ranks third in having the most number of national parks of any state next to Alaska and California. Because of this, and along with seven national forests, seven national monuments and several state parks, the tourism is a huge industry that plays a big role in the state’s economy.

Established in 1919, the 229 square mile Zion National Park attracts the most number of visitors at nearly 3 million each year. The area is popular for horseback riding, nature walks, camping and several night programs. The 55 square mile Bryce Canyon National Park, with its natural amphitheatres, was established in 1928 and draws in about 1.5 million visitors annually. Other national parks in Utah are the 119 square mile Arches National Park which receives around 1.2 annual visitors, the 527 square mile Canyonlands National Park with more than half a million visitors, and the 377 square mile Capitol Reef National Park that attracts nearly 800,000 visitors.
