The history of Nampa was first written out when it became a significant railroad town due to the number of railroad lines running through it, including the Oregon Short Line Railroad. The name of the area is believed to have come from a Shoshoni word which means moccasin or footprint but many people also refer to the town as the New Jerusalem because of its citizens’ strong religion. There are many reasons to visit Nampa including a visit to any of its 24 parks with Lakeview Park being the largest. Another great place to check out is the 140,000 square foot Nampa Recreation Center which offers an aquatics center, gymnasium, climbing walls and many more. The Warhawk Air Museum, Wilson Spring Ponds, Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge, Sawtooth Winery, Canyon County Historical Museum and Nampa Dog Park are also popular in the area. The Idaho Center Arena also hosts several annual events including the Snake River Stampede Rodeo which is considered among the top rodeos in the United States.
