Before European settlers came into the area, Portland was originally inhabited by the Native Americans who called it Machigonne. In 1632, it was permanently settled in as a fishing village called Casco. It was later renamed to Falmouth when the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1658. The citizens in the area later changed the name to Portland after an isle in Dorset, England back in 1786. Tourists of Portland love walking along Portland Harbor to see the Old Port district. Its Arts district also features several places of interest such as the Portland Museum of Art, Portland Public Library, Maine Historical Society and Museum, the Kotzschmar Memorial Organ and Portland Symphony Orchestra. Portland is also home to a few notable buildings like the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception, Wadsworth-Longfellow House and the Old Casco Bank Building.
