The non-profit zoo, which opened in 1927, is located along the eastern banks of O’Shaughnessy Reservoir on the Scioto River. The zoo sits in a facility with a total land area of 580 acres and is home to more than 7000 animals representing more than 800 species. The zoo has been named as the number one zoo in the US and attracts more than 2.3 million visitors every year.
Exhibits in the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium are currently divided into eight regions, housing animals for that particular region in the world. This includes North America, Polar Frontier, Pachyderms, Asia Quest, Shores and Aquarium, Congo Expedition, Voyage to Australia and the Islands and Heart of Africa. The facility also has other attractions which include the Mangels-Illions Carousel, Zoombezi Bay and Jungle Jack’s Landing. The Columbus Zoo supports several outside projects and has provided $2 million worth of grants to support conservation projects all over the world.
