The National Zoological Park, or more popularly known as the National Zoo, is one of the oldest zoos in the country. Founded in 1889, the National Zoo actually has two campuses: one is the 163-acre urban park in Washington DC while the 3200-acre Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute can be found in Front Royal. As part of the Smithsonian Institution, admission is free in the National Zoo.
The National Zoo in Washington DC is home to 2000 animals representing 400 species. Major exhibits in the zoo include Amazonia, Asia Trail, Giant Panda Habitat, Great Ape House and Think Tank. Other exhibits in the National Zoo include the Cheetah Conservation Station, Reptile Discovery Center, Kids’ Farm, American Bison Exhibit and many more. It has also been home to a few notable animals including Smokey Bear, who was part of the zoo from 1950 until he died in 1976, as well as two giant pandas namely Ling-Ling and Hsing-Hsing.
