The National Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian Institution (NASM) opened on July 1, 1976. The opening of the museum was a major highlight of the Bicentennial Celebration. There were 26 galleries on 10-acres in the building. There were 6,700,000 visitors to the museum in 2014.

There are plenty of things to do at the museum.  Visitors can explore the exhibits and displays. Watch and engage in demonstrations throughout the museum. Watch a movie on their IMAX Theatre screen. Experience the feeling of the planetarium programs. Check out the observatory and maybe get the chance to chat with a research astronomer. Take simulator rides, trying your skills as a fighter. There are plenty of tours and some places to sit to listen in on story time.

There are over 20,000 artifacts with one of them being the well-known Orbiter, Space Shuttle, OV-103, Discovery. This shuttle was given to the museum in April 2012 after it flew on 39 Earth-orbital missions. It now sits in the James S. McDonnell Space Hangar on display. Another artifact housed at the  Boeing Aviation Hangar at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, Chantilly, VA. that is known to be the  world's fastest jet-propelled aircraft is the SR-71, known as The Blackbird. It was used in the United States Air Force for 24 years and on its last flight from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C., the flight took 1 hour, 4 minutes, and 20 seconds. When it landed at Washington-Dulles International Airport it was turned over to the museum.
