Yosemite National Park was established on October 1, 1890, and covers 1,190 square miles of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California. The park is rich with history and culture. You can explore and find out about the first people to live there and see the Indian Village of Ahwahnee; listen to the stories of the Mariposa Battalion; look out over beautiful scenic views like the Wawona Tunnel View, and stand in front of a grove of mature giant sequoias.
There is hiking, camping, fishing, horseback riding, guided tours and more to do in the park. Some highlights are to be able to catch Horsetail Falls at that magical time, in that magical spot, to see the cascade of water seem to turn to fire as the sun sets. There are 2088 listed species within the park, including amphibians, birds, fish, mammals, reptiles and vascular plants.
Yosemite Village is a small town within the park where employees live. There is also a place tourist’s can stay- the Yosemite Lodge. There is also a grocery store, post office and place to eat. Yosemite National Park is open year round with certain area closures due to weather and renovation. There were 4,150,217 visitors to the park in 2015.
