Albert Smith Bickmore established the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) on April 6, 1869. It is located across the street from Central Park (on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.) The American Museum of Natural History covers two million square feet of space that includes 27 connected buildings and 45 exhibition halls, along with a planetarium and library. There are approximately 5 million visitors a year, of which an average of 500,000 are students.

The AMNH is famous for appearing in scenes in different movies, such as Malcolm X, The Squid, and the Whale, and the museum was featured in An American Tail: The Treasure of Manhattan Island. The AMNH is also the setting for quite a few TV shows, novels, and video games.

Museums have always been places to learn about different things and the AMNH has not been any different with their educational programs for Pre-K-12 students. They have made major strides to help by offering the Master of Arts in Teaching program and Urban Advantage program. Besides these programs, the museum is the first in the northern hemisphere to offer a Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Arts in Teaching through Their Richard Gilder Graduate School, which was established in 2006.
