Harry M. Wegeforth, M.D. (Dr. Harry) founded the 100-acre San Diego Zoo on October 2, 1916. The zoo began from a leftover exposition of animals left behind in cages with a few caretakers. The first addition to the newly acquired zoo was a 1-year-old female brown bear named Caesar, which the acting director, Dr. Thompson, drove in his roadster from the navy ship she disembarked from, to the zoo.
In 1921, the Zoo finally had a permanent home in Balboa Park. That same year Ellen Browning Scripps became the Zoo’s first benefactor by donating $9,000 for the fence, enabling the boundaries to be established when the zoo was completed in 1923. Dr. Harry had lodgings built on the zoo grounds in early 1920 so that caretakers and their families could live there and would be close to the animals. The first animal hospital was built in 1927, again, thanks to the gracious Ellen Browning Scripps, for which it was named.
There are 10 animal exhibits in the zoo. The San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research was founded in 1975 as an extension of the zoo to preserve and protect endangered species. A little piece of fame: the movie Scavenger Hunt, 1965 featured the San Diego Zoo, but don’t worry, no actual ostriches were used.
