San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

Grace McCann Morley founded the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) on January 18, 1935. The museum opened on the fourth floor of the War Memorial Veterans Building in the Civic Center, in San Francisco. The center of the collection began with the works by Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera.

There are several well-known artists’ pieces that are contained in the SFMOMA: Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso, and Marston. The museum did not find its permanent home until January 18, 1995. In June of 2013, the museum began to offer exhibits off campus and closed the museum doors for an expansion project. They are not scheduled to open until May 14, 2016. As a preview of the renovated San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the museum will be holding a special event to mark the occasion. The Modern Ball 2016 will be held on May 12, 2016, for the first chance to see the expansion.

The new expansion will have benefits such as seven added floors of space added to the existing art museum. These areas will include places for a sculpture garden and gallery, a white box for performances, acoustics, and multi-screen projections, and a terrace that will give views of the city and the sculpture garden from a different viewpoint, at a different level of the museum.
