It was the founding father of Tucson, Hugo O’Conor, who authorized the construction of a military fort in the area called Presidio San Agustin del Tucson. During the Spanish era, attacks were being consistently made, an example of which is called the Second Battle of Tucson. Eventually, the area became more popular as Tucson and it soon became a part of Mexico after gaining independence from Spain in 1821. At present, Tucson’s economy relies upon the University of Arizona as well as in the manufacture of optics and optoelectronic systems.
